Melinda calls me late Saturday night during a usual case of insomnia, I just finished pigging out with Larry, Kevin and Kate at Yellowtail in Alameda when this happened (ps, i think sushi house is better). She’s sad that this new site/blog lacked her photo…so I told her I’d figure out a way to get her picture on it w/o her flying back (which would have been awesome).

I finally picked up a DSLR, to those non camera nerds that just means a digital camera with removable lens, and took a bunch of pictures over the weekend. You can compare the pictures above. Well…let’s see…Melinda gets her pictures back on Wallace’s blog, and Wallace has a new toy. Things should be good now (or…this might blow up in my face).

mavericks…

Mavericks has been something of a taboo to me for the last 5 years. I always wished to be in attendance, however I would either find out a day late or be stuck at work doing the typical 9-5. Due to my recent career change and new found autonomy, I finally had the oppertunity to attend this year.

I picked up Zoli, who is the founder of real bird, in Palo Alto around 6am. It took us only a moment to make it to Mavericks, however the hike ahead of us was the real challenge. We had to walk a rough 3 miles with some nutty elevation changes to reach the Mavericks beach. The overall environment was just breath taking. I heard later that over 50,000 attended today. People completely filled the cliffs, bodies were scattered along the beach, binoculars and telephoto lens were everywhere. Two or three helicopters dotted the horizon and boats were being gently rolled by the wave sets. The crowd was eager, and the vibe was of anticipation.

So how was it? I really did not see much, aside from ‘diggers’ and a few glimpses of the surfers dropping in. Just having the oppertunity to be part of ’surfing mecca’ was more then eneough. In short, I still have a smile on my face, and I plan on attending next year. This time with a proper camera and lens, maybe surf shorts and more apt shoes as well.

oh…HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROSE! (I’ll catch up to you in december!)
